Reviving Marvel: The Future of Shang-Chi and Unexplored Heroes in the MCU

Following the end of the Infinity Saga, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced challenges in recapturing its previous excitement. However, despite some significant disappointments, there have still been noteworthy successes across both movies and series, with highlights like Shang-Chi and Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight.

Regrettably, much like Moon Knight, which has not been adequately explored since its finale, the character of Shang-Chi, portrayed by Simu Liu, has been largely neglected by Marvel's decision-makers.

Simu Liu’s character deserves more recognition.

As the MCU transitioned from the monumental achievement of Endgame, phase four presented several challenges for the studio, including projects that did not meet expectations like Eternals and Thor 4. Nevertheless, it wasn’t entirely a somber phase; for instance, Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi shines as one of the most engaging enhancements to the MCU in recent years.

However, similar to Moon Knight, the connections between Shang-Chi's narrative and the broader MCU story remain tenuous at best. While the potential for a sequel exists, with a packed release schedule ahead—featuring two Avengers films—it might take considerable time before audiences see another standalone Shang-Chi installment.

On a positive note, Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed the original film, is set to take the helm for Spider-Man 4. Considering his adept handling of action sequences in Shang-Chi, there is reason for optimism. For Shang-Chi’s future, it is hoped that Marvel will increasingly invest in characters like Moon Knight and Shang-Chi, as they have demonstrated a strong appeal to viewers.

There was an original plan for a Shang-Chi sequel before the Avengers movies.

Interestingly, following the success of the first Shang-Chi film amidst a global pandemic, a sequel was slated in the MCU’s future. Unfortunately, the project has since become dormant. Liu confirmed last year that the sequel is still in development, explaining that it was expected to be positioned between the then-titled Avengers: Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.

He shared insights about the sequel’s progress, mentioning that it was supposed to follow the Avengers films, but delays resulting from unforeseen circumstances have caused setbacks. He expressed hope for more definitive updates soon.

As the future unfolds for both Shang-Chi and Moon Knight, fans are eager for more traditional superhero films that don't rely heavily on guest appearances for their success.

Shang-Chi and the Myth of the Ten Rings is currently available for streaming on Disney Plus.
