2K Set to Unveil Major Franchise Update at Summer Game Fest
May-20-2024
2K, the entity responsible for delivering popular series like BioShock and Borderlands, hints at a significant announcement for one of its warmly regarded franchises during the Summer Game Fest in June.
The news broke via the official Twitter account for Summer Game Fest, stating, "On Friday, June 7, at the Summer Game Fest, 2K is set to unveil the newest addition to one of its most cherished and significant franchises."
Apart from its notable titles, Borderlands and BioShock, 2K's portfolio includes the esteemed strategy series Civilization and XCOM, alongside the narrative-driven Mafia series. The company also oversees publishing renowned sports titles such as NBA 2K, PGA Tour 2K, and WWE 2K. Nonetheless, the terms "most cherished and significant" seemingly suggest a spotlight on either BioShock or Borderlands, potentially Civilization or XCOM, with the sports titles appearing less likely by comparison, though no slight is meant towards them.
Without any preceding leaks, pinpointing the exact franchise 2K and Summer Game Fest are alluding to remains speculative until the June event. For a bit of background, the previous installment in the BioShock universe was 2013's BioShock Infinite. December 2019 saw the announcement of the still unnamed BioShock 4, with Cloud Chambers taking the helm for its development, yet details on the sequel have been scant since.
On the other hand, Borderlands introduced spinoffs of Tiny Tina's Wonderland and New Tales from the Borderlands in 2022, with the latest main entry being Borderlands 3, released in 2019.
While the sequel to BioShock or a fourth Borderlands game stands as strong contenders, the prospect of unveiling a new Mafia, Civilization, or XCOM game also holds merit. Ultimately, the confirmation rests in the hands of time and Geoff Keighley.
In the meantime, the much-anticipated game Judas, crafted by the original BioShock creator, is gaining attention for its striking resemblance to BioShock's iconic setting and narrative approach.
