Stardew Valley Creator Eric Barone Reflects on Success and Maintains Humble Lifestyle
May-19-2024
Following the monumental success of Stardew Valley, selling over 30 million units, its creator, Eric Barone—known online as ConcernedApe—retains a modest self-perception and an everyday routine that hasn't strayed far from the game's beginnings. In a dialogue with Aftermath, Barone humbly states he is simply a person who crafted a video game, avoiding the high regard in which the gaming community often holds him. He reflects on the genesis of Stardew Valley:
"Creating the game I longed for was my primary focus. My aim hit on a broader appeal that was unbeknownst to me—a sentiment shared by others seeking a fresh gaming experience. The timing felt right, and had I not pursued it, another would likely have filled the niche in a similar period."
Despite the game's towering achievement, Barone's daily life remains untransformed. He emphasizes his commitment to the Starward Valley universe and its fans, concentrating on direct involvement to address issues and avert any letdowns. His lifestyle hasn't escalated to any opulent extents despite the game's earnings, detailing to Aftermath his grounded existence and continued devotion to enhancing Stardew Valley, particularly with updates like 1.6.
"Generating wealth was never the motive," Barone elaborates. "My passion lies in crafting and distributing my work. That's the essence of my efforts. My dedication persists, provided I have the means. Otherwise, a mainstream position would suffice until I could return to my creative endeavors."
Additionally, Stardew Valley has become a hallmark for the burgeoning genre of idle farming simulators, inspiring games like Rusty's Retirement. With consistent and substantial updates, including the expansive 1.6 patch featuring over 500 modifications, Barone's drive to enrich Stardew Valley remains unabated. He eagerly awaits the completion and flawless release of update 1.6 across all platforms before pivoting his focus to the upcoming project, Haunted Chocolatier.
